Process
Letterpress is one of the oldest and most beautiful forms of printing. Our Chandler & Price platen press is well over a century old and while it’s usually covered in oil, creates exquisite printed pieces. Once a design is complete, we create a custom raised plate that we mount into the press. We then complete the press “make ready” in which the press ink levels and final print position are ironed out. As we run the press, the plate is pressed into the hand-fed paper sheet, creating a distinctive and tactile impression into the paper. This transforms the plain paper sheet into a sculptural heirloom that is truly special.
Our JT Marshall foil press has a similar clam shell style operation but instead of ink, we feed a foil spool through the press. The custom metal die we mount into the press is heated and when the press is closed, the die adheres the foil material onto the paper sheet only where the raised plate makes contact with the paper. We love foil for its ability to create a high contrast aesthetic like light lettering on dark paper. Hot foiling is not limited to metallic tones and some of our favorite projects are ones using solid-color pigment foils.
